Our communities are facing a potential blood shortage crisis, and donations are needed immediately! Due to the continued impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, Versiti’s mobile blood collections are down more than 20,000 units of blood this year alone.
Versiti Blood Center of Illinois needs to see an average of 5,000 donors this week, more than 700 per day, to adequately provide their 86 hospital partners in the state with lifesaving blood.
There is currently less than a day’s inventory of blood available for our hospital partners. Patients’ lives could be at risk, particularly if trauma situations occur if we cannot maintain an adequate blood supply. One in seven people entering the hospital will need blood.
All blood types are needed, with type O positive and O negative most in demand. o O positive is the most common blood type, while O negative blood is the universal type that can be received safely by all patients in emergencies when the blood type is not known.
Donating blood takes about an hour and has the potential to save up to three lives.
