Our history

The Chartering of our Congregation was held during an evening worship service on Sunday, December 27, 1953, in Taft Elementary School, located just east of our church property at Ingalls and Oregon Avenues. Mrs. Melvin (Rosalind Pence) Pohl, along with many other women and men of the fledgling congregation, fundraised for several years by preparing and serving dinners for the Joliet Business & Professional Women organization that held business meetings in the Social Hall of the Central Presbyterian Church of Joliet, Illinois located at Richards Street and First Avenue. The Central property is now part of the National Historic Landmark - Jacob Henry Mansion Estate.

Our 70th Anniversary of being chartered with PC(USA) is December 27, 2023!

As a Matthew 25 church, we seek to:

  • Build congregational vitality by challenging people and congregations to deepen their faith and get actively and joyfully engaged with their community and the world.

  • Dismantle structural racism by advocating and acting to break down the systems, practices and thinking that underlie discrimination, bias, prejudice and oppression of people of color.

  • Eradicate systemic poverty by working to change laws, policies, plans and structures in our society that perpetuate economic exploitation of people who are poor.
